Truth and Reconciliation Week and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

In DSB1’s Southern region, during Truth and Reconciliation Week, students who identified as Indigenous from Timiskaming District Secondary School (TDSS) attended New Liskeard Public School (NLPS) to provide students with information on the history of the Orange Shirt and knowledge of why an Orange Shirt is worn on September 30.

Additionally, the students from TDSS spoke about the eagle feather and its significance and importance. Students explained that as individuals walk their paths, they sometimes make mistakes. However, individuals can make amends by apologizing, changing their behavior or asking for help. As a reminder of these teachings, students at NLPS completed a feather activity with the assistance of TDSS students.

On September 30, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, students and staff reflected on the impact of residential schools and honoured the lost children and Survivors, their families, and communities. In Kirkland Lake, students and staff attended the Every Child Matters Pow Wow presented by Keepers of the Circle. Present at the Pow Wow were community members, partners and organizations, vendors, and Elders.
